Mary is the daughter of an Aleut and a Seminole, which makes her about as purely Native American as possible and representing the extremes of being Native American. Before she began to play the Native American "love" flute, she played the classical flute found in most orchestras.
Since she began to play the native flute, Mary has played in many places which include the Smithsonian Institute, has appeared on television, has played background music for at least one film, and has made several CDs while working with Silver Wave Records. She gives private lessons at her home now and travels extensively to various gigs where she appears to the delight of her audiences.
Mary's first album, The Offering, is excellent solo flute music, enhanced by being played while in a cavern, and led to Mary being the first woman to win the Native American Music Awards, "Flutist of the Year" in 1999.
In 2000, she won this award again and also the "Best Female Artist" award. Also in 2000, Mary's second album, Heart of the World, won the Association for Independent Music award for "Best Native American Recording" and the Native American Music Awards "New Age Voice" and "Best New Age Recording".
In 2003, Mary's third album, Beneath the Raven Moon, won the Grammy for "Best Native American Music Album". In 2005, Mary's fourth album, Feed the Fire, was nominated for the Grammy. In 2007, her fifth album, Dance with the Wind, won the Grammy for "Best Native American Music Album".
Mary has three companion songbooks available now for her albums, The Offering, Heart of the World, and Beneath the Raven Moon. All of her albums and books are available from The Oregon Flute Store.
